Scaling

Scaling Raw Data Values

In many cases a value will need to converted from its raw form to a human identifiable value or simply convert engineering units. The Unit of Measure feature can be used for this. Below we’ll describe a simple example.

Before You Begin

You will need the following:

Instructions

In this example, the raw temperature measurement is provided as an integer while the actual measurement is in tenths of degrees Fahrenheit, i.e. the data comes in as 755 instead of 75.5. In order to display this value properly in APM, we must convert the Unit of Measure by diving by 10.

Configure Unit of Measure (uom) scaling equation

  1. Log in to APM.
  2. On the left navigation column, select “Admin” > “Units of Measure Conversions”.
  3. Once in the Units of Measure Conversions section either select the “+” in the top right to add a new group or click the “gear” in an existing group.
  4. Click the gear icon next to the Units of Measure Conversions group name and select “Add new unit conversion”.
  5. Use the figure in this section as an example. In the “Expression” column add your formula.
  6. In the “From Unit” column enter a unique name - this will need to match your “Source Unit of Measure” later.
  7. In the “To Unit Aliases” enter the engineering units your Expression is calculating - this will need to match your “Standard Unit of Measure” later.
  8. “From Unit Aliases” column should at least include your “From Unit” value.
  9. “To Unit Display Name” will appear on your Analysis charts next to the value.
  10. Fill out the remaining columns as you see fit.

Configure the tag(s) to be converted

  1. Log in to APM.
  2. On the left navigation column, select “Essentials” > “Assets”.
  3. Navigate the context browser through your [Asset] Hierarchy to find the asset with the tags you wish to convert, select “Open”.
  4. Select the “Tags” tab.
  5. Select the tag name to convert.
  6. Hover over the “Source Unit of Measure” field and select the gear icon.
  7. Ensure that you’re able to find the “From Unit” value from the Unit of Measure table. Otherwise, wait ~5 minutes, log out and log back in for the value to become available.
  8. Select “Save”.
  9. Select the gear icon in the “Standard Unit of Measure” field.
  10. Ensure that you’re able to find the “To Unit Alias” value from the Unit of Measure table. Otherwise, wait ~5 minutes, log out and log back in for the value to become available.
  11. Select “Save”.

Next Steps

Once you have scaled your data, verify that the values are converted in data analysis.
