Square D Selects SBS Technologies to Supply Embedded Computer Platforms For Their Next Generation Electrical Power Management Systems
SBS Technologies, Inc., today announced that it has been selected by Square D Company to supply embedded computer platforms for their next generation of power management systems. Power management systems help industrial and commercial facilities control the cost, quality, and reliability of their electric power. These systems are becoming increasingly important as electric utilities deregulate and power shortages surface. Square D's systems consist of electric meters installed at key points to track energy consumption and power quality, software that gathers and helps analyze the data, and often some capability to control lighting or other loads. SBS' PC7 Rugged All-in-One Embedded Computer is used in Square D's power management system as a server into which meters feed data that is then available over an intranet. "We are very pleased to have this opportunity to work with Square D," says Clarence Peckham, President, SBS Embedded Computers Division. "As an industry leader in power management, with thousands of POWERLOGIC systems installed worldwide, Square D had very specific requirements and a tight delivery schedule. Our miniature industrial PC offered the features and flexibility that Square D needed. SBS was able to satisfy their technical requirements while still meeting their challenging delivery schedule because the solution is one of our standard products." "POWERLOGIC systems dominate because our customers save money as they get a grip on their power," explains Mike Pyle, Director of Engineering in the Power Management Operation of Square D. "We are developing innovative enterprise web-based solutions and we needed a robust and flexible hardware platform for the software to run on," he continued. Pyle selected the PC7 from SBS. He was impressed that it was designed and built for industrial environments, could meet the many stringent Square D requirements including CE and FCC electromagnetic and transient tests, operation without a fan (a common early failure point), and optically isolated communications. Pyle also notes that Square D is able to use the same platform for both Linux and Windows Embedded NT-based software products. In addition, the wide variety of hard disk and FLASH memory options, as well as modem, Ethernet, and serial communications, allow the same platform to be used in many applications. "The most impressive thing, though," says Pyle, "is the professionalism and proactive support we have seen from SBS." According to Pyle, SBS has delivered on every commitment made including some challenging delivery schedules. Also, SBS has been very proactive in understanding the Square D application and making suggestions to optimize product performance. "Our POWERLOGIC system operates at peek performance because of quality hardware like the SBS PC7," stated Pyle, "no doubt about it." The PC7 is a rugged all-in-one embedded computer with integrated power supply, installed in a very compact EMI protected metal housing supporting DIN rail mounting. The all-in-one concept, with flexible processor and RAM configurations and an array of peripherals, includes video interface, Ethernet, HD, FlashDrive, floppy and two PC card slots combined with a custom specific assembly service, and provides optimized price/performance for a variety of OEM applications. The PC7 is one of several leading edge embedded PCs for VMEbus, CompactPCI and busless platforms manufactured by SBS.
