SBS Technologies, with Motorola Computer Group and MEN Mikro Elektronik, Announce First PC·MIP Mezzanine Products
Unique, worldwide mezzanine I/O standard offers 'true modularity'
SBS Technologies Inc. ("SBS") (Nasdaq: SBSE) with its wholly-owned subsidiary SBS GreenSpring Modular I/O, will announce the availability of the first PCïMIP mezzanine input/output products today at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, CA. PC·MIP is a high-performance, high-density mezzanine that utilizes the PCI bus as the logical interface. PC·MIP combines the PCI-based electrical interface with the smart flexible and cost effective form factor of IndustryPack™ modules and certain features of other I/O modules. It is the smallest open architecture mezzanine (47 x 90 mm) available, and is ideal for use in high performance industrial, COTS and telephony applications. The first PC·MIP products to ship will include CPU and Carrier boards, which offer six PC·MIP sites, and nine modules designed for industrial computing environments requiring high-performance I/O capabilities. The four PC·MIP modules offer a variety of I/O functions enabling designers to mix-and-match modules to system requirements. In 1997, the PC·MIP standardization effort was initiated by industry leaders SBS GreenSpring Modular I/O; MEN Mikro Elektronik of Nuremberg, Germany; and Motorola Computer Group. The purpose of this agreement was to develop and introduce a unique and worldwide mezzanine I/O standard. The PC·MIP draft specification is registered with ANSI /VITA (American National Standards Institute/ VME International Trade Association) under the direction of the Task Group Chair, Kim Rubin of the SBS Technologies Computer Group. All PC·MIP products conform to the PC·MIP draft specification (ANSI/VITA Task Group VITA-29). "PC·MIP is a logical extension of our IndustryPack module, which was originally developed by GreenSpring Computers in 1990," said Joe Zabkar, President SBS Computer Group. "PC·MIP retains the flexibility and technical capabilities of IndustryPack and adds the bandwidth of PCI. It is ideal for bandwidth-intensive applications requiring performance, flexibility and faster time to market. In order to continue to serve more of our customers' needs for solutions that offer 'true modularity', we plan to offer PC·MIP modules for a wide variety of applications," added Zabkar.
