SBS Technologies Communications Group Unveils High Availability System for Mission Critical Telecom Applications

SBS Technologies, Inc. Communications Group (Nasdaq: SBSE) will introduce its revolutionary, Cascade™ 6U High Availability (HA) CompactPCI® System solution for telecom/networking OEM customers at SUPERCOMM in Atlanta, June 6 to 8. As a follow up to its existing family of CompactPCI system products, the Cascade High Availability system is designed for demanding mission critical OEM telecom and networking applications targeting customers providing Central Office (CO) destined servers and/or target convergence systems. The system will support a modular approach for total flexibility and offer the full range of telecommunications WAN I/O options for OEM development. "With the introduction of the Cascade High Availability System, the SBS Communications Group establishes itself as a strategic supplier of mission critical CompactPCI telecom platforms," states Christopher J. Amenson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SBS Technologies. "The Cascade HA System introduces the market to a new generation of CompactPCI fault-tolerant telecom platforms that address demanding telco infrastructure equipment needs." "There is clearly a great need in the telecom market for fault-tolerant, high availability systems that meet the demanding requirements of mission critical telco-grade applications. Given SBS' long history of supplying critical OEM components to Nokia, I'm confident that this strategic High Availability System will offer the quality and performance that has been the traditional hallmark of SBS products," comments Dr. Steve Goldberg, Vice President of Research & Development at Nokia IPRG. "We look forward to a continued relationship with SBS and support their innovative advances in the telecom space." Designed to meet high availability five-nines (99.999%) up-time expectations, the Cascade series of NEBS-compliant HA systems will feature a tightly coupled architecture with redundancy in CPUs, power supplies, fans, and alarm systems. The Cascade system is supported by dual SBS K2 High Availability CompactPCI single board computers based on the PowerPC 750 processor. Several studies have shown that system failures occur most often via hard disk drives, followed by fans, power supplies, and CPUs. To ensure minimal downtime and prevent single failures, SBS' Cascade system offers hot-swap capabilities. SBS is strategically positioned as the only provider of a fault-tolerant, HA system offering the richest mix of WAN/convergence interface support from 56k to ATM-OC3 as well as enabling communications protocols such as PPP, HDLC, Frame Relay, ATM and SS7. Another added benefit for this new series of products is SBS' ability and willingness to customize the systems based on the specific needs of OEM customers. "As a member of our WindLink™ Partner program, SBS helps us provide our customers with industry-leading OEM products. Given the synergy that we've had in bringing together the VxWorks® embedded operating system and SBS' line of OEM products for the telecom market, we are excited about enhancing our high availability system offerings to mutual OEM customers through products such as the Cascade HA system," remarks Dave Sheaffer, Senior Marketing Director for Wind River's Platforms business unit. Pricing and Availability Target list pricing for the basic system is $19,500 USD. Planned availability for basic system is September 2000.
