Perceptual Robotics Selects SBS Embedded PC for Rugged TrueLook™ Installations
SBS Technologies Inc. (SBS) today announced that Perceptual Robotics Inc. (PRI) has selected the SBS PC7 rugged all-in-one embedded PC for use in outdoor or environmentally rugged installations of its TrueLook application. The PC7 plays a key role in Perceptual Robotics' pole-mounted dome camera installation, running the on -site component of the TrueLook software. The Perceptual Robotics system will be demonstrated in the SBS booth 6219 at NIA. PRI TrueLook software gives authorized users the power to remotely control the camera from any web browser from the desktop, laptop or wireless connection. The PC7 is housed in a NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) box that also contains a heater, air conditioning unit and a wireless Internet connection. The Perceptual Robotics TrueLook application, with the PC7, is used primarily for outdoor and environmentally contaminated installations such as construction sites and outdoor events, or for rugged sites such as manufacturing plants and trade shows. "We selected the PC7 from SBS Technologies because of its smaller size and greater reliability. These computers must function reliably in outdoor installations in a wide range of weather conditions and climates, including high humidity, dust and temperatures ranging from –60o (Alaska) to 120o (Death Valley)," said Richard Zatek, project manager of Perceptual Robotics. "The PC7 was designed to work in almost any environment and is being used by many large corporations on the factory floor to control robots, on ships and planes," continued Zatek, "For our particular application, the PC7 comes equipped with an RS-422 port which eliminates the need to buy an additional sea level card to control our dome cameras," concluded Zatek. "We are very pleased with the opportunity to work with Perceptual Robotics," said Clarence Peckham, Vice President of SBS. "The Internet offers today's businesses new ways to solve the problems associated with managing and monitoring remote sites and hazardous environments. The TrueLook application, a tool that can substantially increase productivity, is installed in some very demanding environments. SBS' PC7 is a very robust, flexible hardware platform that meets PRI's exacting requirements for a very rugged embedded PC with exceptional processing power." TrueLook Applications Using PC7 TrueLook software allows users anywhere in the world to explore remote locations from their PCs. Multiple simultaneous users can take control of strategically-mounted, interactive cameras and authorized users can individually control what they see with a click of the mouse. Each can actively select the desired angles and can zoom in with TrueLook's up to 18x crystal-clear optical zoom. TrueLook automatically adapts to any speed modem eliminating the need for special software or downloads. TrueLook includes a collaboration tool kit to help users attach comments and send or save pictures. Other users can then click on the pictures and be taken live to the same location. One global Fortune 10 corporation is using the TrueLook with PC7 system to watch installations of large pieces of equipment worldwide. Their project managers can check site status daily from the home office, eliminating monthly during on-site visits. Increases in productivity can be substantial. For example, one camera installed in a factory saved the company $8,000 in one instance alone. For instance, they held an inspection remotely rather than flying in five engineers. The PC7 The PC7 is a rugged all-in-one embedded computer with an integrated power supply installed in a very compact EMI (electro-magnetic interference) protected metal housing supporting DIN rail mounting. The all-in-one concept, with flexible processor and RAM configurations and an array of peripherals, includes video interface, Ethernet, hard disk, FlashDrive, floppy and two PC card slots combined with a custom specific assembly service provides optimized price/performance for a variety of OEM applications. The PC7 is one of several leading edge embedded PCs for VMEbus, CompactPCI and busless platforms manufactured by SBS. About Perceptual Robotics Founded in 1996, Perceptual Robotics, Inc. was the first commercial organization to put live visual content on the Internet and has attracted attention around the world with its vision of the future in which anyone anywhere can see anything live on the Internet. The company is the developer and marketer of internationally recognized TrueLook software products. TrueLook gives web users the ability to look around a remote location exactly as if they were there. Users interactively look where they like by remotely controlling robotic cameras on site, through an ordinary browser on their own PC, without any additional software or plug-ins.
