(Nasdaq: SBSE), a leading provider of embedded computing technology, today announced the addition of AltiVec technology to its high-performance VG4 - a single-slot, 6U VMEbus single board computer. The new VG4 utilizes the PowerPC7410/75x's leading-edge AltiVec vector processing unit to deliver exceptional processing power and increased memory capacity. This combined with the VG4's flexible processor and memory configurations and impressive array of on-board peripherals, makes the upgraded VG4 ideal for a wide variety of military, aerospace and industrial automation applications requiring advanced data and signal processing. The VG4 also offers a variety of rugged options for applications requiring a high level of stability and availability in harsh environments. "We added AltiVec technology to VG4's basic platform to meet the needs of today's high-end data and signal processing applications," said Clarence Peckham, president of SBS Technologies' commercial and government groups. "By combining advanced processing power with VG4's inherent design flexibility, ruggedization options and SBS Technologies' custom-specific assembly service, we are able to offer developers optimized price/performance for a variety of applications." VG4 provides several on-board interfaces, including 10BaseT/100BaseTX Ethernet, Wide-SCSI and two PMC interfaces. The basic platform includes up to 512 MB SDRAM (100MHz) with ECC, and 1 or 2 MB L2 cache. Special features include four serial channels with flexible RS232 or RS422/485 interfacing, IEEE 1284 parallel port, USB, mouse and key board interfaces, two DMA controllers, 32 KB non-volatile SRAM, and up to 64 MB Flash. Seven timers/counters plus 16-bit general purpose I/O also are available. A watchdog and a real-time clock support real-time systems. Rugged needs are addressed with an optional MIL-STD-1553 bus controller, conduction cooling, and an extended temperature range of up to –40o to +85 o C (standard temperature version operates in a range from 0 o to +70 o C). Increased shock and vibration immunity, using stiffener bars, wedge locks, and conformal coating, provides additional protection against humidity and aerosols.
