Data Scientists Should be Industries' First Round Draft Picks

Data Scientists Should be Industries' First Round Draft Picks

With football season in full swing, I started thinking about how Big Data is leading both sports and industrial teams to victory. This idea originally came to me when I saw a “60 Minutes” episode almost 10 years ago entitled, “The Secret of Their NFL Success.” In this segment, Bill Belichick and John Fox, two NFL head coaches, described how they were using software to analyze their teams and opponents.

The difference over the past decade, however, is the vast amount of data that can be processed and how the analytical capabilities of these applications have grown. With the need to analyze this data, has come the emergence of the role of the Data Scientist. Data scientists are critical to mastering the secrets behind Big Data. In fact, I think data scientists will soon be an organization’s “first round draft pick.”
