What's Your Industrial Internet Score?

What does the Industrial Internet mean to me as an operations leader? Connecting equipment, people, data and insights sounds promising, but how do I get started?

As a former manufacturing leader myself, I’m excited to be a part of the division of GE that is making the Industrial Internet real for manufacturers. To that end, my team and I developed what we call the Industrial Internet Maturity Model. It allows manufacturers to undergo a self-assessment based on industry-specific questions. In the end, it produces a report that allows manufacturers to visually understand where they are and where they aspire to be, from a data, information and technology perspective in the four walls of manufacturing.

Throughout this process, we’ve brought in our closest manufacturing industry friends to GE—both internally and externally—to bounce ideas and thoughts off of, and to make it a more robust experience. What’s exciting is that we’re getting immediate feedback from our customers regarding the tool such as, “This will help to emphasize the operational and engineering teams to think more strategically.”

Additionally, one operations leader mentioned, “Manufacturing has found the low-hanging fruit; now to get up in the tree, we need more accurate data,” regarding their continuous improvement strategies. Starting down the path of Industrial Internet maturity begins with first recognizing where you are and then understanding where you want to go as an organization.
